The clothes are never the starting point. “The design begins with the script.” From there, she finds the details that reveal character, building each wardrobe in collaboration with actors, directors and writers. “It’s not about the clothes. It’s about the storytelling, the collaboration, the narrative.”
Her own uniform is equally considered. De Rakoff has long returned to menswear and tailoring, drawn to the idea of “taking something that belongs to one person and interpreting it for another.” Her wardrobe balances boyish with feminine, intention with function.
