“You don’t completely reinvent the form every time,” she says. “You improve on what you did the last time or take something away from what you learned in your work the last time.” That attention carries through to the smallest details—and from architecture to clothing. Wearing Lafayette 148 Double Face, a construction her fashion-designer mother taught her to appreciate, Berke looks instinctively to what’s inside: “How the buttons were sewn on, how the buttonhole was edged, how the hem is sewn, how the interior seams are made—I care about that in buildings, so I really care about it in clothes, as well.”
